Who knew there was so many clever tips for those items in our home. We usually throw away.
In the spirit of saving money in the garden here are 10 amazing garden tips that you can try today.
1. Humble Eggshell
Next time you crack an egg. Save the shell. Your asking yourself why? Answer the humble eggshell is a rich source of calcium which plants love. First you prepare egg shells by putting them into the blender until they resemble powder. Next you add crushed eggshells into your soil around the plants, soil absorbs it better when it is crushed. I am putting my crushed eggshells around my roses.
Now this is every gardeners nightmare. You just planted the carrots and the cat or dog, has taken a liking to the carrots. Not anymore. We all have them in our kitchen drawer, plastic forks left over from the family BBQ or children’s party.
Time to put them into action. Take your plastic forks and put them around your flowers,
herbs, vegetables, no more pesky cats or dogs.
Great for the feet but did you know because it contains magnesium it is great for the garden too.
Mix 2 or 3 tablespoons into the watering can and once a month, spread it over the garden.
You will have a very healthy garden.
4.Vegetable Cooking Water
Water will have lots of nutrients from the cooked vegetables. First let the water cool down, give those potted plants or garden a boost by watering them with the cooled water.
Another great use for the humble egg. After the breakfast having eaten egg soldiers with the kids. With top off the empty shell you place a little compost in it and a seed. Keep it indoors until plant is ready to be transferred to the garden. Calcium in the shell will give your little seedling an extra boost. Great idea to share with the kids.
Its that time of year again, you have gotten your pruning shears out. Rose bush needs a bit of tender loving care. Instead of throwing the cuttings into the compost. You can expand your Rose bush by placing the cutting into the humble spud. Moisture of the potato will help new roots to grow and in the process a new rose bush is born. Nice present to pass onto family and friends.
With this simple tip, those plants who love space and love to take over your garden will be stopped in there tracks. First you will need a plastic pot, something to cut it with and strong pair of hands. Cut the base off the plastic pot and bury it in the ground and transplant that plant into it. This stops roots spreading and thus the plant spreading and taking over.
Simpler idea to buying bell jars or cloches. Take a Large plastic bottle and cut it 3/4 way from the base. Hey presto a mini greenhouse. Now put it over those plants who need a little extra bit of help.
This caught my eye. So here is what you do and why. Pinch the upper portions of your herb plant stems off (basil in particular) to encourage new leaf growth. Herbs have a natural instinct to stay alive and multiply, so when they are pinched, they send a signal to the dormant leaf buds to grow. It’s strange how this works, but it’s true for most plants.
Our little friends who nibble where they should not. Here is a simple idea and all you need is coffee grounds left over from making coffee. Around base of plants, sprinkle coffee grounds which act as natural slug repellent.
